The Royal Family

Good Afternoon everyone,

I did some research into the Royal Family since I find it quite interesting. But, I can never remember who is who! So, I decided to put together a guide to the Royal Family for Dummies.

George VI

George VI (Albert Frederick Arthur George) was born on the 14/12/1895 to George V and Mary of Teck. He was the 2nd of five children. When he was born, he was not the direct heir to the throne. The heir was his older brother Edward. Edward was the King of England from the 20th of January 1936 – 11th of December 1936. He abdicated his throne so he could marry Wallis Simpson a divorcee. Therefore, his younger brother George was now the heir.

George married Elizabeth Bows-Lyon (4/8/1900) on the 26th of April 1923. The king was married when he became king therefore Elizabeth became the Queen consort of the United Kingdom.  Together, they had two children before George became Queen. The first child together, a daughter was born on the 21st of April 1926 at 17 Bruton Street, Mayfair, London, United Kingdom. The daughter was called Elizabeth Alexandra Mary. 4 years later, Elizabeth gave birth again, to another daughter called Margaret Rose. The eldest child (Elizabeth) is now heir to the throne  since she is the eldest children and she has no brothers.

Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon. She married Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon in 1960 and they divorced in 1978. They together had two children – David Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley and Lady Sarah Chatto. Princess Margaret died on the 9th of February after suffering from another stroke. Her mother, Elizabeth died 7 weeks after Margaret but their ashes were both buried  with George VI on the 9th of April.

Queen Elizabeth II

Elizabeth  married in 1947 to Philip Mountbatten. Philip Mountbatten was born in 1921 to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenburg. Philip was given the titles of Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich of Greenwich in the County of London on the morning of the wedding to Elizabeth. The couple had 4 children together – Charles Philip Arthur George (Prince Charles) born 14/11/1948, Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise (Princess Anne) born 15/8/1950, Andrew Albert Christian Edward (Prince Andrew) born 19/2/1960 and Edward Antony Richard Louis (Prince Edward) born 10/03/1964.

King George died on the 6th of February 1952, therefore Elizabeth was the new Queen of England.

Prince Charles: Prince of Wales

As the Queen eldest child, Charles is heir to the throne.

On the 29 of July 1981, Charles married Lady Diana Spencer. Diana was a princess and the princess of Wales though marriage. Their marriage lasted 11 years and they divorced in 1996. Their marriage produced two children – William Arthur Philip Louis (Prince William) born – 21/06/1982 and Henry Charles Albert David (Prince Harry) born – 19/09/1986.

Prince Charles re-married in April of 2005 to Camilla Parker-Bowles. Charles’ eldest son is third in line to the throne.

On the 29/4/2011, Charles’ eldest son William, married Catherine Middleton. Together, they were name the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The Duke and  Duchess of Cambridge have had two children. Prince George of Cambridge (George Alexander Louis) born on the 22/07/2013 and Princess Charlotte of Cambridge (Charlotte Elizabeth Diana) born on 02/05/2015. Prince George is 4th in line for the throne.

Princess Anne: Princess Royal.

Princess Anne is the 2nd child born to Elizabeth and Philip in 1950. Princess Anne married Mark Phillips on the 28/04/1992 but they divorced on the 28/08/1996. The couple had two children. Anne decided that her children would not have a title such as prince or princess.

Peter Mark Andrew Phillips was born on the 15/11/1977. He married Autumn Phillips and the couple have two children. Savannah Anne Kathleen Phillips born on the 29/12/2010 and Elizabeth Phillips born on the 29/03/2012.

Zara Elizabeth Anne Phillips was born on the 15/05/1981. She married Mike Tindall on the 31/07/2011. Together, they have a daughter called Mia Grace Tindall born on the 17/01/2014.

Prince Andrew: Duke of York

Prince Andrew is the 3rd child born to Elizabeth and Philip in 1960. The first of the Queen’s children to be born while she was Queen. He married Sarah Ferguson on the 23/07/1986 and they divorced on the 30/05/1996. The couple had two children during their marriage.

On the 08/08/88, The Duchess of York gave birth to a daughter called Beatrice Elizabeth Mary. On the 23/03/90, she gave birth to their second daughter called Eugenie Victoria Helena. Neither of their children has married to date.

Prince Edward: Earl of Wessex

Prince Edward was the 4th and final child of Elizabeth and Philip in 1964. He married Sophie Rhys-Jones on the 19/06/99 and they have two children together. She was named the Countess of Wessex. Their first child, Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary Mountbatten- Windsor (Lady Louise Windsor) who was born on 08/11/03. The second child, James Alexander Philip Theo Mountbatten-Windsor (James – Viscount Severn) was born on 17/12/07.
